ABOUT FRED
Rev Fred Harrell
Fred is a native of Central Florida and a graduate of the University of Florida and Reformed Theological Seminary.
In 1996, he founded City Church San Francisco and guided it through nearly two decades of meaningful growth—becoming a community of more than 1,800 people and launching ministries in counseling, education, and social impact. In 2015, Fred led City Church to become fully open and affirming of LGBTQ+ people, a watershed moment that reshaped the church’s identity and deepened its witness to God’s expansive love.
In 2023, Fred launched Cultivate, a ministry devoted to the well-being of pastors and the flourishing of congregations.
Drawing on more than 35 years of ordained ministry, he now coaches, consults, and companions leaders and churches navigating transition, discernment, and renewal.
Fred is also a certified Spiritual Director, having completed the Art of Spiritual Direction program at San Francisco Theological Seminary.
When asked what brings him vocational joy, Fred often says, “Anything that draws on my 35 years of ministry experience.”
His calling now centers on offering that experience generously to others.
Outside of work, he finds deep joy in time with his family, traveling, and especially sitting on a quiet beach overlooking the Sea of Cortez—his happy place.
Fred and his wife, Terely, have been married since 1986 and have four adult children.
